Brad,
I spoke with the ARRL VEC and was able to get clarification on your situation.
A license upgrade (in your case, Technician to General) does not extend or reset the term of a license. Like you - and others I spoke with - I had assumed that an upgrade would renew the license term. The truth is that there are only two actions that reset the expiration date: renewing the license itself or obtaining a vanity callsign.
That said, the ARRL VEC advised that if you retake and pass the Technician exam and can provide proof that you previously passed the General class exam (for example, a CSCE or a copy of your General class license), your General class privileges can be reinstated.
It may not be the ideal outcome, but it does avoid having to retake both exams.
Thanks,
Justin - W5JWP

Thank you. I'm bummed about losing the license and also bummed by the more complicated Tech test. I'm not doing this for a business. It was just a very mild hobby for my old age. The C19 era messed up a lot of things.

Brad,
I relayed the information exactly as it appears in QRZ, which shows your license (KF5NNZ) expired in November 2021 and that the renewal window has passed. As a result, there are currently no operating privileges associated with that callsign.
You can verify this directly here: https://www.qrz.com/db/KF5NNZ.
After you mentioned upgrading in 2017, I located that application, which was approved on 08/01/2017. Under normal circumstances, that upgrade would have extended your expiration date to 2027. However, the application includes an unusual detail.

The “Requested Expiration Date” field is populated. That’s not something I’ve personally seen before, and if it were honored, would provide a 12-year term. Given that inconsistency, this appears to be an issue best addressed by the VEC that handled the filing. I recommend contacting W5YI directly at vec at w5yi-vec.org<mailto:vec at w5yi-vec.org> to see if they can provide clarification or assistance.
Best,
Justin

Forget that guy; he can't help. What is the length of time a general license is good for? The Washington County fellow indicated that the General license only is good for 4 years.
