[W5SFA] Zoom?

Sad to say, we’ve already ceded a lot of our privacy to the government, as well as corporations – especially by using those things in our pockets called “cell phones”.

However, for the sake of this discussion, ham radio communications are by definition unsecured, so from a privacy perspective it doesn’t matter much to me whether our club meeting goes out over the air, or over the internet.

It’s going to be somewhat awkward if we use more than one method of communicating – for example if we do both Zoom and over the air. We’d have to get the audio from the radio into Zoom – not an insurmountable problem but makes things more complicated. It might not be legal to go the other way around (Zoom into radio) since that could be considered broadcasting. Better minds than mine can debate that one!

But to keep is simple, I suggest we either do all Zoom or all on-the-air, and don’t try to mix. If we decide to do a face-to-face meeting in July, like outdoors in the park, it might still be possible to include folks staying home by using the radio or zoom.

I could also see us having a second meeting each month via zoom, especially since it would lend itself to giving technical presentations. Or even just a ragchew.

I'm not as active in this club as the rest of you. I don't like where this is going. Remember when Facebook was an easy social activity place? Look what it is now. How long will it take for the government and others to watch everything we do through these devices? When have we shut down the entire country for viruses? When have we ever been told to stay at home continuously? Now, amazingly, an unsecured communication system is available for everybody to communicate upon.

Jim, I know lots of folks areusing Zoom, though I have not done so myself. My opinion is that if we do start having face-to-face meetings or gatherings in person, there will be folks who will not feel comfortable doing so. So I think we have to either host zoom from a laptop, or continue to have an on-the-air component so the remote folks can stay plugged in to what’s going on.

Zoom costs $15/month to host meetings up to 100 participants, but that is not really a big deal if we only use it for a few months. It has the advantage of being able to run presentations.

We’ll see what other members have to say…

Carol and I attend church, master gardener class, yoga, a business networking club and even a weekly virtual happy hour with friends via Zoom. I've never set one up myself, but they are extremely easy to use as a participant. Perhaps that's a safe all-weather club meeting option as well for those that "need to see"?
