W5SFA Members,
This morning I reconfigured the club's Bellville UHF and VHF repeaters, as
was discussed at the June meeting. These changes are being implemented on a
trial basis to see if we can simplify interaction between digital and analog
users, and also to simplify our hardware. Please read on if you're a user
of the Bellville repeaters, as some of these changes are significant. I'd
like to get feedback, so please let me know if you have any questions,
commments or problems with the new setup.
1. If you are an FM user, you won't see much different on the VHF
repeater (145.410 Mhz). Analog FM traffic will be passed as normal, with
the same CTCSS tone of 100 Hz. However, if you are a digital user, be aware
that the VHF repeater is now analog only and will not accept digital C4FM
transmissions.
2. If you are an FM user, be aware that the UHF repeater (444.875
Mhz) is now digital only, and will not accept analog FM transmissions. To
use our UHF repeater, you must have a C4FM transceiver, such as the FTM-100,
FTM-400, FTM-3207, FT-991, FTM-7250 or one of the handheld transceivers that
supports UHF C4FM. Also an important note: your transceiver should be in
digital mode (e.g. DN not flashing and without the bar on top), and use a
DG-ID of 00. (The DG-ID acts essentially like a digital CTCSS to open the
repeater).
The new wrinkle with this configuration is that digital traffic from the UHF
repeater will be heard on the VHF repeater. Similarly, analog traffic from
the VHF repeater will be heard on the UHF repeater. So although only
digital traffic will be allowed on the UHF repeater, and only analog traffic
will be allowed on the VHF repeater, analog and digital users will be able
to talk to each other. This is something we could not do with our previous
setup, where digital users would have to switch back to analog mode to talk
to an analog user.
Please give the new setup a try over the next few weeks so we can thoroughly
test it. Again, please let me know your feedback, and we'll talk more about
this at the July club meeting.
73,
Roger N5RWK
