Verizon CEO Lays Out Enterprise Benefits of 5G in CES Keynote

Verizon VEO Hans Vestberg spent his keynote speech at CES this week delivering a message of possibilities, specifically the possibilities 5G will unlock beyond the consumer space.

Vestberg called 5G a “leap” over prior networks and introduced a number of initiatives Verizon is taking as part of its 5G rollout including partnerships with the New York Times and Disney. Vestberg also gave the audience a look at the capabilities of 5G in the real world with a demonstration of a drone flying in Los Angeles, where Verizon has a 5G network up and running. It showed speeds of 900 Mbps.

Vestberg’s overarching theme was on the “currencies of 5G” that allow it to deliver unprecedented technological advancements. According to a release from Verizon following the speech, they are:

              • Speed and Throughput: Peak data rates of 10 gigabits per second and mobile data volumes of 10 terabits per second per square kilometer

                  • Mobility, Connected Devices & IoT: Devices traveling up to 500 KPH can stay connected to 5G networks and 1 million devices can be supported by 5G in a square kilometer

                  • Energy Efficiency & Service Deployment: 5G equipment and devices will use 10% of the energy needed for 4G equipment and devices, and services will be implemented on 5G more quickly and efficiently

                  • Latency and Reliability: 5 millisecond end-to-end travel time from device to network edge with 99.999% reliability.
